The town of Saffron Walden is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 80 miles that would take around 1 hour and 30 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M11. It is situated in the Uttlesford district of Essex and has a population of 14,313 according to the 2001 Census.
The settlement that is the site of the town today was once inhabited by Bronze age and Iron age tribes and when the Romans left the Anglo-Saxons established a town there. In Medieval times the primary trade was wool but in the 16th and 17th Centuries the saffron crocus was widely grown in the area, the stigma was used in medicines, condiments, perfumes, dyes and as an aphrodisiac and it was in this period that the towns name changed from Chipping Walden to Saffron Walden. Because the town has not been destroyed by fire or war many of the buildings remain that date back to centuries making the market square a popular historic visitor attraction.
There are many places of interest in the town such as Walden Castle ruins, Bridge End Garden, Audley End Manor House, Corn Exchange and the Market Square. There are also places of interest to visit in the neighbouring towns of Stansted Mountfitchet, Linton, Duxford and Bishops Stortford.
